we are loossing our humanity !

Former Vice President Gore Congratulates President Obama on Nobel Peace Prize

United States President Barack Obama was selected this month as the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. The award recognized Obama’s “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

Speaking in Madison, Wisconsin on the day of the announcement, former Vice President and winner of the 2007 Peace Prize Al Gore applauded President Obama’s recognition.

"I think it's thrilling President Barack Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It's an honor for him… it's an honor for our country," Gore stated. "Much of what he has accomplished already is going to be far more appreciated in the eyes of history as it has been by the Nobel committee in their announcement early this morning."

Gore also noted Obama's "success in changing the way the world is approaching the climate crisis," especially pointing out his leadership at the UN Climate Summit last month.

Statistical Rejection of 'Global Cooling'

Independent statisticians contracted by the Associated Press (AP) found that there is no evidence of 'global cooling.' AP gave the statisticians temperature data with out telling them what the numbers represented and asked them to look for trends.

The result? There is no evidence of a cooling trend.

Coral Reef Decline Instigates 'Freezer Plan'

As water temperatures and chemistry are affected by the changing climate, coral reefs are dying off at an alarming rate. In order to preserve at least part of one the most diverse ecosystems on earth, scientists have proposed preserving live coral species in liquid nitrogen. The coral would then be reintroduced once oceans returned to a habitable state.

Meet a Presenter:

TCP Presenter Joyce Lanning is a volunteer environmental educator and supporter, and a former Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Public Health, Department of Health Care Organization and Policy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Former Vice President Gore Salutes TCP Presenter Henry Hart

At a recent speaking engagement in Madison, Wisconsin, Al Gore recognized and congratulated TCP Presenter Henry Hart, who at 93 is our oldest presenter. Gore called Henry “one of the most effective presenters of all” and said that he was an “inspiration.” In addition to Mr. Hart’s generosity with his time and energy as a TCP Presenter, he also made a major donation to TCP on behalf of himself and his late wife, Virginia, to develop a youth initiative.

The Climate Project joins Mr. Gore in sincerely thanking Henry for his ongoing commitment to TCP.

TCP Presenters Stand Up for International Day of Action

Climate activists, educators, and writers along with every day citizens around the world joined 350.org this month to raise awareness about atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Why is the number 350 so important? According to a recent study by NASA, a concentration of 350 part per million (ppm) or less of CO2 in the atmosphere will allow our planet to maintain life sustaining climate equilibrium. Currently, the atmosphere has 390 ppm of CO2, which is why it’s so urgent to draw attention to reducing emissions.

Here are just a few activities TCP Presenters across the globe were involved in:

• Joe Opatrny organized a march in Madrid, Spain where participants raced backwards to symbolize a decrease in atmospheric carbon dioxide. TCP Presenter Angel Cano also participated.

• Amanda Katili-Niode, TCP Presenter and branch manager coordinated 35 simultaneous presentations across Indonesia.

• Janelle Hansen rallied in Portland, Oregon with TCP Board member and Gubernatorial candidate Bill Bradbury.

• Joyce Lanning helped out at an event in Birmingham, Alabama where TCP Presenter Michael Churchman gave a TCP talk.

• Gwen Grif?th marched at an event in Nashville, Tennessee.

• Jeff Mikulina, TCP Presenter and Director of Sierra Club’s Hawaii Chapter chalked a 1meter sea level rise around the island of Maui with 2,300 students.

• Tami Coleman, along with TCP Presenters Jenny Phillips, Miranda Parry and TCP Board member Lise Van Susteren joined a group marching across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, New York.

• Stephen Leibo, TCP Presenter and district manager, was the keynote speaker at an event at the New York State Capital along with Congressman Paul Tonko.

TCP Presenter Dave “Rasta” Rastovich Paddles 700KM to Draw Attention to Whale Migration

TCP Presenter Dave Rastovich is following the migratory route of humpback whales in a one-man sea kayak this fall to raise awareness about cetaceans (whales) as well as other environmental issues in a journey he’s calling TRANSPARENTSEA. Dave, a professional surfer and long-time environmentalist, set out from Byron Bay on October 1st and aims to ?nish at Bondi Beach on November 5th. American surfer Chris Del Moro, co-dire ctor of Dave’s NGO “Surfers for Cetaceans” will also paddle, along with a videographer and photographer. The trip will also draw attention to issues like agricultural run off, commercial ?shing’s impact on cetaceans, and river and estuary health.

Dave passed the halfway mark of his journey on October 20th. He and his crew have been organizing beach clean ups as needed along the way. In his words: "Our intentions are that, after 36 days and 700 kilometers, we'll have helped educate a lot of people on the beauty and majesty of the whales, plus the impact we all have on what is such an amazing stretch of coastline and in what ways we might all implement positive change."

To follow Dave on the rest of his journey visit his blog at http://transparentseavoyage.com/.

The Role of the Arctic as a "Carbon Sink" Could Change Due to Global Warming

The Arctic, an important regulator of atmospheric carbon dioxide, may be adversely affected by rising temperatures. A recent study by the U.S. Geological Survey found that the Arctic Circle, which has played a critical role in climate control since the last Ice Age by functioning as a net "carbon sink," may soon emit more carbon than it traps.

The study explains that the permafrost layer of the Arctic Circle has historically stored carbon dioxide and methane. Unlike soil at lower latitudes, the Arctic permafrost does not release carbon seasonally, but rather retains it permanently. At the same time, the cold temperatures of the Arctic Circle slow the rate of carbon release from organic matter to less than the amount trapped by the permafrost, resulting in a net "carbon sink."

Now this natural regulation of atmospheric carbon may be changing. According to the study, global warming may cause a reversal of the "carbon sink." Arctic permafrost is now melting and more carbon is being released into the atmosphere at faster rates than previously recorded. The full effects of Arctic thawing are still not fully understood, and further research will be necessary to better understand which areas of the world will be most affected by this development.

Climate Cover-Up: The Crusade to Deny Global Warming

TCP Canada Chair and David Suzuki Foundation Board Member James Hoggan has written a book that exposes the roots of the climate change denier movement. Climate Cover-Up: The Crusade to Deny Global Warming covers the strategies, tactics and people that have been fueling controversy about the climate crisis.

According to David Suzuki, TCP Science Advisor and founder of the David Suzuki Foundation:

“Climate Cover-Up documents one of the most disgusting stories ever hidden about corporate disinformation. What you’ll discover in this book amounts to proof of an intergenerational crime.”

Considering A World Without Ice

TCP Science Advisor and University of Michigan Geophysics professor Henry Pollack is currently touring the US with his new book A World Without Ice. The book considers the role ice has played in literally shaping our world, as well as its in?uence on human civilization. Now, as glaciers around the world recede, ice has a different role to play: the impartial indicator that humans are irrevocably changing our natural world.

Asked why he chose to write this book, Dr. Pollack responded: Just as TCP has tried to reach the general public with the realities of climate change, I too have always looked for ways to do the same. Telling the story of Earth's changing climate through the prism of ice has always been attractive to me, because ice is such a sensitive and unambiguous indicator of climate change. And, it is very neutral. As I say in the book, "Ice asks no questions, presents no arguments, reads no newspapers, listens to no debates. It is not burdened by ideology, and carries no political baggage as it crosses the threshold from solid to liquid. It just melts." Moreover the consequences of ice melting appear in rising sea levels around the globe.

Former Vice President Al Gore, author of the forward to A World Without Ice describes Dr. Pollack as “an engaging and effective communicator, a scientist with the rare ability to engage ordinary people and translate scienti?c ideas into everyday terms that are easy to understand.”

Last Chance: Preserving Life on Earth

National Wildlife Foundation (NWF) President Larry Schweiger, a long time TCP Presenter and supporter, recently released Last Chance: Preserving Life on Earth, a book that both describes the immediate effects of climate change as well as how alternative energy can prevent the worst from occurring. All proceeds from the book will go to the NWF. Larry is also a board member of TCP’s sister organization The Alliance for Climate Protection .

Larry wrote in his blog:

I believe that we have little time to act to protect the nature of tomorrow. In the book I have attempted to cover the latest science behind the fast- approaching threats and to make the case for wildlife, to offer practical solutions, and to suggest actions we can all follow.
